In 2002 we purchased 20 acres of undeveloped land in the coastal prairie just outside of Point Arena on the Mendocino coast. In the early years of developing the land, we built our homes, installed an off-grid energy system, developed water infrastructure and planted hedgerows. Since that time we have continued to improve upon the farm infrastructure and worked to create a diversified farmstead with the efforts of three generations of family. Jen and Ben manage the spectrum of farm goings-on. Jane and Michael are retired and contribute to land projects and activities. Logan was born just after we purchased the land and Bryce was born on the land; both are now exploring the world beyond Point Arena with Windy Hollow Farm as their home base.
Windy Hollow Farm is windy. To slow the wind here we have planted hedgerows and built wind fences with reclaimed wood and mill ends. These protected zones host cozy garden nooks planted with a mix of perennial flowers, medicinals and culinary herbs. A kitchen garden provides fresh vegetables and the hoophouse is a protected zone for growing warmer weather crops.
Although we are concerned about the environment, we still like refrigeration, listening to music, and using a computer just as much as most people. We designed and installed our own energy system that harnesses the power of the wind and sun, and is backed up with a generator. Without too much effort, we are able to use 90% less energy than the average American household.
Living in a Mediterranean climate with an extended dry season means that water is always a valuable commodity. Our gardens are watered with collected rainwater stored in an agricultural pond. Domestic water is all about conservation. A well is complemented with roofwater catchment for our homes.
